Gene supplementation and editing in livestock for biomedical and agricultural applications
نویسندگان
چکیده
the conservation of gene-function and physiology between people and livestock species advocates for their utility in modeling human disease. Furthermore, agricultural animal production will play a pivotal role in providing high-quality protein to advance human health in the face of a burgeoning global population. Both the development of animal models and the improvement of livestock for food can be greatly facilitated by genetic engineering. Historically, genetic modification has largely been restricted to mice due to technological and logistical challenges. Recent developments have essentially eliminated the technological barriers to livestock genetic modification. Transposons provide an efficient, non-viral method for gene addition in livestock, without the use of an antibiotic resistance gene that could confound regulatory acceptance. the facile use of engineered nucleases to inactivate genes and to stimulate gene conversion in livestock will also be described. Finally, the loci to be engineered, and the species-dependent and geopolitical constraints on implementing genome engineering into animal production paradigms will be discussed. The Promises and Challenges of Precision Gene Editing in Animals of Agricultural Importance
We live in changing times—it has always been that way. But, now the times are changing more rapidly, dramatically, and unpredictably. The world must accommodate an increasing population that demands greater nutrition per person, better health, and greater energy consumption per person. As the world’s population rises to a predicted level of nearly 10 billion by 2050, most want sustainable growt...
متن کاملEfficient nonmeiotic allele introgression in livestock using custom endonucleases.
We have expanded the livestock gene editing toolbox to include transcription activator-like (TAL) effector nuclease (TALEN)- and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/Cas9-stimulated homology-directed repair (HDR) using plasmid, rAAV, and oligonucleotide templates. Toward the genetic dehorning of dairy cattle, we introgressed a bovine POLLED allele into horned bull ...
متن کاملMolecular Identification of Salmonella Strains Isolated from Livestock in Alborz Province and Their Serotyping
Background and Objective: Salmonellosis is an important infectious zoonotic disease that makes it even more significant to identify and control the causative strains. Molecular methods, especially polymerase chain reaction (PCR), for virulence genes can help to quickly and accurately identify Salmonella strains. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was molecular identification based on sivH, ...
متن کاملSurvey of FecXL Locus of BMP15 Gene and Growth Hormone (GH) Gene and Their Effects on Lambing Rate in Zel Sheep
The GH gene and BMP15 gene have been used as candidate genes for marker-assisted selection in different livestock species. Random blood samples were obtained from 180 Zel sheep breed to study genetic polymorphism of these genes. DNA was extracted from blood samples and a 365 bp fragment from the exon V of the ovine growth hormone gene and a 312 bp region from exon II of BMP15 gene were amplifi...
متن کاملElectrolytes Supplementation through Drinking Water to Revive Broiler Production during Tropical Summer Stresses Management
This experiment was carried out for a period of 4 weeks with 240 day old straight- run broiler (Cobb-500) chicks to investigate the effects of administering electrolytes in drinking water on the productive performance (live weight, body weight gain, feed consumption, feed conversion and water consumption) and to determine the economic impact of using electrolytes. The chicks were randomly distr...
